HERTZ HISTORY

Hertz Car Rental is the largest general use car rental company in the world with 8,100 locations in 147 countries worldwide. It is also the number one airport car rental brand in the U.S. But it all started in 1918, when the company was founded by Walter L. Jacobs, who started a car rental operation in Chicago. In 1923, Jacobs sold it to John D. Hertz, President of Yellow Cab and Yellow Truck and Coach Manufacturing Company, who made it a subsidiary of his company and renamed it "Hertz Drive-Ur-Self System". Hertz opened the first rent-a-car facility at Chicago's Midway Airport in 1932. In 1954, the company was renamed “The Hertz Corporation” and listed it on the
New York Stock Exchange the following year. In 1967, The Hertz Corporation became a wholly owned subsidiary of RCA and was operated as a separate entity. In 1989, Hertz redefined the car rental business with its #1 Club Gold® Service to ensure fast service for customers so they don’t have to deal with any unnecessary paperwork and don’t have to wait on the long lines at the time of rental. In 2001, Hertz launched another new level of premium car rental service with the introduction of the Hertz Prestige Collection that combined luxury vehicles with Hertz exclusive customer services. Today, Hertz Car Rental has branches across the globe and continues to thrive.
